5 | Hello everyone! Let's finish off 2020 on a good note with a real bang! We're excited to announce that we've finally cracked all of the 4 remaining title-screen panorama seeds! If you don't remember us, we're the ones that cracked the original panorama seed, the pack.png seed, as well as the 'Skull on Fire' painting seed. We still have many projects on the way, including cracking the Herobrine seed and (due to popular demand) the 'Minecraft in Smash Bros' backgrounds! Join us on Discord where you can either help with these projects or just hang around and keep up with the news!

2 | Frequently asked questions
3 | 1) | Q: | How do I generate these worlds myself?
4 | A: | 1) This is only for Java Edition, you can't generate this on Bedrock Edition. 2) You have to use the correct version to generate the worlds properly. The exact snapshot you need to use is written on the main page of this sheet for each panorama. If you don't know how to find these versions, here's a tutorial: https://youtu.be/-gWUURjTaL0?t=44 3) After you've launched the correct snapshot version of Minecraft, you can use the seed to generate the panorama world. 4) To get to the correct location that's shown on the title-screen, either press F3 and fly to the correct coordinates, or use the prepared teleport command (on the main page) that will place you exactly where you need to be.
5 | 2) | Q: | Is there any way to get this on Bedrock Edition (Console/Phone...)?
6 | A: | No, there's no seed that could ever generate these worlds on Bedrock Edition. The only way you could ever access these worlds on Bedrock Edition is if you used Java Edition to generate them first, and then used some program to convert them to Bedrock Edition.
7 | 3) | Q: | Why don't the seeds look exactly the same as the ones on the title-screen? Is this fake?
8 | A: | Mojang used in-development versions to create these panoramas, which have some differences in the code that caused their features to generate slightly differently. They also forced the placement of some features and manually altered the world to make it more interesting. Dinnerbone also confirmed this to us on one of his Twitch streams.
9 | 4) | Q: | Why haven't you asked Mojang for the seed?
10 | A: | We tried. Dinnerbone told us to ask JAPPA (@JasperBoerstra), since apparently he was the one who made these newer panoramas, meaning he could still possibly have the worlds/seeds. We tried reaching out to him multiple times, but sadly, we never got a reply. :/
11 | 5) | Q: | Can you be sure that these are the actual seeds? What if there's a seed that matches the panorama better?
12 | A: | Yes, these are the actual seeds, and no, there aren't any similar seeds that would match it better. If you don't understand how Minecraft uses seeds to generate the world and it's features (on a technical level), it might be hard to explain exactly why that is true, so here's an intuitive explanation instead: There's wayyyy less seeds than there are total possible block combinations. In other words, you can't get a seed where there's just some small difference in some places while keeping everything the same (there are exceptions to this, like "shadow seeds", but that doesn't apply here).
13 | 6) | Q: | How were you able to find the seed if Mojang modified the worlds?
14 | A: | That was indeed a problem, and it took a few attempts to get it right. Some of the earlier attempts at cracking the seed using a feature that was modified didn't yield any results. Thankfully, there's no reason why Mojang would modify absolutely everything for just a few screenshots, so there were always some features that could be used to crack the seed in the end.
15 | 7) | Q: | So, is there any way to generate the panoramas completely correctly, as shown on the title-screen?
16 | A: | Sadly, no. Even if Mojang released their in-development version of the game that they used to generate these worlds, we're pretty sure that they also manually altered the worlds after that. While there is a way to mod the game to force the 1.14 village to spawn in the correct location, the best you can generally do is just rebuild these parts yourself. The only way we could ever get the perfectly correct worlds would be if Mojang released the full world save-files themselves.
17 | 8) | Q: | Is it possible someone already generated the panorama seed by chance before?
18 | A: | Now here's where things get interesting this time around... Generally, the answer is always no. Given there's 2^64 possible seeds, it's practically impossible for anyone to randomly stumble upon a specific one of them. Yes we've heard it all before, "if there's a chance, it doesn't mean it's impossible", and while that's true in theory, in practice, the chances are so astronomically small (so small that your brain probably can't even comprehend it) that you can safely assume that it never happened to anyone. On top of that, we've checked on the internet before publishing these seeds and found 0 results, meaning nobody found these seeds yet, with one exception - the 1.14 panorama seed! But despite that seed being known, it seems that nobody ever realized it was the actual panorama seed! There's more to this, so please read the "Additional Info" page to understand what actually happened. Also, the 1.13 panorama seed is a special case as well, since it's seed comes from the name of the snapshot in which Mojang originally generated it. This means that it's very likely that a lot of people have generated that same world when testing that particular snapshot, using it's name as the seed, and never realized it was the world from which the panorama came from!
19 | 9) | Q: | Did you use BOINC (distributed computing) for this like with the other projects?
20 | A: | Nope. When there's so much info present in a screenshot, it's easily possible to crack the seed in just a few hours on a single person's GPU with well optimized code. The original panorama and pack.png seeds would've also been possible to crack on a single GPU, but all the clever approaches didn't work out back then, so a less sophisticated method was used instead to just get it done.
21 | 10) | Q: | Can this code be used for cracking other seeds as well?
22 | A: | No. This isn't general-purpose code. Each panorama needed it's own seedcracking code to be written. It can't be used to crack anything else, but if you're interested, you can find some of the code on the "Additional info" page of this spreadsheet.
23 | 11) | Q: | Is there a text version of the seed for the other panoramas as well?
24 | A: | No, there's a text seed only for the 1.13 panorama, it's impossible for the other panoramas to have a text seed for technical reasons. The Java code Minecraft uses to convert text into seeds only hashes to a 32-bit integer, meaning only seeds between 2147483647 and -2147483648 can come from text.
25 | 12) | Q: | What else is Minecraft@Home working on? What projects are you doing next?
26 | A: | If you join our Discord, you can see a complete list of all of our finished/current/future projects in the #projects channel. Here's a short summary of what we've been up to and what's coming next: • Old news first - we've found the original panorama seed, the pack.png seed and the 'Skull on Fire' painting seed a few months ago. • We're still looking for the tallest cactus (the current record is 24 blocks tall). Then we're also trying to find the seed of the original Herobrine creepypasta screenshot, as well as all the seeds shown in the Official Minecraft Trailer (2011). • We plan to find all the future panoramas that Mojang adds to the game (we're expecting the 1.17 panorama to show up soon), unless Mojang decides to start releasing the seeds for these. • Due to popular demand, we're also going to try to find all the seeds for the Minecraft backgrounds in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
27 | 13) | Q: | Is there any way I could help with these projects?
28 | A: | Yes, there's usually a way to help for everybody! • You can just help passively by contributing your idle computing power to one of our projects through BOINC (join through here). • You can help by working on an in-game recreation (usually building a world from some screenshot) at the beginning of most projects. • If you're good at CUDA/C/C++ and know/want to learn seedfinding/seedcracking, we'd really appreciate if you joined us! • If you know how to make mods for Minecraft, we often need random tweaks (usually visual) to help us when making recreations. • If you're just generally knowledgable at the game, we'd also be glad to have you. • You're also welcome to just casually join and hang around, we're a very laid back community! • Sharing the info about these projects & Minecraft@Home itself helps us out a lot as well!
29 | 14) | Q: | Can I request a seed for you to find?
30 | A: | We have a #project-suggestions channel on our Discord where you can suggest a new project. Keep in mind though that we won't just work on cracking any random seed that doesn't have any significance to the community, and most (if not all) of the significant ones have already been suggested there.
31 | 15) | Q: | Did you work with SalC1? Will anyone be making a video on this?
32 | A: | Despite the popular belief, we (Minecraft@Home) aren't affiliated with SalC1 in any way (we're not "his group"). We worked with SalC1 in the past regarding the original panorama seed and the pack.png seed, but we've also worked with AntVenom regarding the 'Skull on Fire' painting seed. None of them will be making a video on this though, since the content would mostly be the same thing all over again. If you're Youtuber and want to cover these projects in-depth, we'd gladly help you with getting all the info for the video!

3 | About Minecraft@Home
4 | We're a laid back technical community centered around Minecraft, mostly focused on seedcracking/seedfinding projects. Our goal is to find the extremes of Minecraft's generation, as well as cracking Minecraft's many significant seeds. We use BOINC (open-source platform for distributed computing) for some projects that require a lot of computing power.
5 | How the panorama works in-game & how to make your own one
6 | The panoramas are made out of six 1024x1024 screenshots, taken in each of the cardinal directions, joined together into a 3D cube. If you want to make your own panorama, you're gonna need to set your FOV precisely to 90. You can do this by editing options.txt in the game files and setting the fov value to 0.5. Keep in mind though that in-game actions like flying or being underwater affect your FOV and will mess it up. You will either need to compensate for it, or just use a mod that disables FOV effects.
7 | The 1.13 panorama seed backstory
8 | Since the 1.13 panorama's seed is just the name of the snapshot that was used to make it, it is very likely that a good amount of people actually generated that world in that snapshot using it's name as the seed, without ever knowing it was the panorama world all along! :D We've checked on Google before publishing this and we haven't found anyone that realized this.
9 | The 1.14 panorama seed "mysterious backstory"
10 | The seed for the 1.14 panorama seems to have a bit of a backstory to it. We have found 2 different places online where the seed was used, though nobody ever realized it's the panorama seed. Here's our best interpretation of what we think happened: • The seed was first featured in this seed showcase video 9 whole months BEFORE the panorama was made. • Then, 9 months after, Mojang must've purposefully used this seed to make the 1.14 panorama after finding it online. There's no way they randomly got the same seed. They also used a different screenshot from this world to make a blog post about the snapshot in which it got added. • And lastly, a bit over 2 months after the panorama got added to the game, Youtuber Gokusak started a let's play on this seed without realizing it's the panorama seed. Without understanding what he's saying (let us know if you can translate it for us), it looks like he just randomly generated this world, but as mentioned in the FAQ, randomly generating a specific seed is practically impossible, so it's more likely that he also found the old seed showcase video the same way Mojang did and used the seed from that. There's also a suspicious cut when he creates the world, so this theory is quite likely (MUCH MUCH more likely than it happening by random chance). He didn't reveal the seed in that video, but he put it in the description in the next episode.
11 | Code that was used to crack the seed
12 | Sadly, a lot of the code used to crack the seeds was already lost, since it's only ever useful for that one single seed and can't be used to crack anything else. Here's all the code that survived: • Andrew's code used to crack the 1.15 panorama seed: https://hastebin.com/ezosahetus.cpp • Almost the final version of Andrew's code used to crack the 1.13 panorama seed: https://hatebin.com/yoihfzvnjp (uncomment the 'TEST CORALS 3' & 'TEST GRASS ORIGIN 1' sections) • Some part of Andrew's 1.16 code to crack the structure seed for 1.16 panorama: https://pastebin.com/LG35LRtc
